I am a veteran migraine sufferer, having endured for about 15 years. My neurologist finally told me
Florida was not an ideal place for me to live. Writing this article now in sunny Southern California, I am grateful that
they have lessened from 3-4 times a week to about two a month. What causes migraines?
There are many triggers, but here the most common:
Stress
Lack of Sleep
Weather Changes (Barometric Pressure)
Dehydration
Hormones in Women
Excessive Amounts of Caffeine
Lack of Food
Alcohol
Computer Screens
The pain of a migraine is generally moderate to severe and is usually on one side of the head. Migraines can be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light, visual or verbal disturbances and worsening pain with exertion. They are three times more common in women than men.
So that’s the bad news. Here is the good news. We can help! A study done by the University of Miami tested two groups of migraine sufferers. The first group of participants took their normal medication, but received no massage. The second group received a weekly massage along with their normal medication. Those in the massage group had no migraine headaches during the course of the study and they slept better and had increased serotonin levels.
Having been a sufferer for many years, I know what has helped me and I have in turn been able to help many others. Therapeutic massage, working the shoulders and neck tension to prevent migraines and spasms is a vital component. It improves blood flow and circulation, while relieving stress and tightness.
